Gibson Custom Shop 1957 Les Paul Custom
Features at a glance:
Custom Shop
Back in 1993, the Gibson Custom Shop was founded by only 5 members of staff. At first they were exclusively devoted to individual orders and custom models for various artists- a concept which was destined to be successful. Today the Custom Shop employs roughly 80 experts, who cover the whole range of crafting individual instruments to creating small series and R&D. Their first big project involved the revision of the ’59 and ’60 Flametop Reissues. In order to reach their target of creating a Reissue true to the original, it was amended approx. 25 times The first two prototypes directly went into the hands of Slash and Bryan Adams which suddenly caused a massive demand for these exclusive models.
In addition to crafting classic, solid body guitars, the Gibson Custom Shop now builds semi-solid models as well. These are built together with the 16” semi-solid jazz guitars in Memphis which leads to the division between “Custom Shop Memphis” and “Custom Shop Nashville”, which continues to built classic, solid body guitars.
Les Paul Custom
The highly detailed replicas of the Black Beauties from 1957 are an excellent documentation of the love put into every nut, bolt and screw of each instrument by the Custom Shop cleverly capturing each instrument’s personal note. There is a model for each developmental stage in the history of the Black Beauty available today. The first Les Paul Custom was built in 1954 and featured a solid mahagony body and the so-called Alnico Pickup (neck position). In 1957 the singlecoils were replaced with P.A.F.s and a third Humbucker was added in the centre position. Only very few Custom guitars featured two Humbuckers and that’s why they’re so sought-after these days. The 3-pickup model is also available with a Bigsby Tremolo. Now the Custom Shop even reissues the 1968 Les Paul model with a maple top.
