The Akai SynthStation is a 2-part system: the Akai Pro SynthStation synthesizer application for the iPhone or iPod touch with three different synth engines with drums, leads and basses that take advantage of Akai's virtual analogue synthesis, a set of built-in effects, an arpeggiator engine, a range of filters, an XY controller, and a full sequencer, and the Akai SynthStation 25 keyboard controller.

Software is only half of the story of Akai Professional's SynthStation. The Akai Pro SynthStation 25 is a 25-key MIDI keyboard controller with a dedicated docking port for iPhone or iPod Touch. When you plug an Apple iPhone or iPod Touch into the SynthStation 25 low-profile 25-key controller keyboard, the iPhone or iPod Touch is transformed into a large format colour touchscreen display that provides access the Akai SynthStation software synthesis engines and sequencer. Use the SynthStation 25 with Akai's SynthStation app as well as virtually any MIDI music software or with MIDI hardware devices.

Program sounds, sequence beats, and write songs with just an iPhone or iPod Touch by using the Akai SynthStation app without the SynthStation 25 keyboard. Tap out melodies on the on-screen 25-key keyboard, or lay out beat using an MPC-style pad display. Program a whole set on an iPhone, then take the SynthStation 25 MIDI controller keyboard and perform your creations live. The Akai SynthStation 25 keyboard includes a pitch wheel and a mod wheel, octave buttons, sound-bank navigation buttons, and a set of stereo RCA line outputs and headphone outputs. Onboard USB makes the Akai SynthStation into a flexible MIDI controller or sound module for DAW software.
